Abstract

Scale is defined as the deposits on the surface that arise mainly from the presence of dissolved inorganic mineral salts in the flowing fluid which indicates saturation. The scale formation mechanism is closely related to the composition of water in formation water. Formation water has a chemical composition, namely components of cations and anions. The kinds of scales that occur depend on the composition of the formation water (the content of ions in the formation water). Formation water is a fluid that can dissolve ions in the reservoir. Formation water that is produced with oil and gas contains several compounds in the form of ions, namely cations (positive ions) and anions (negative ions). Estimates of scale growth can be calculated using the Stiff & Davis method and the Skillman, McDonald & Stiff method. The purpose of this study is to determine the causes of scale in the X field and to determine the effect of pH, temperature and ion concentration parameters on the process of forming scales on pipe lines. In this study, 3 field data samples were used using the Stiff & Davis method and the Skillman, McDonald & Stiff method. In this study, the cause of the scale was the Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) scale and there was no indication of the formation of a CaSO4 scale. The effect of the parameters obtained is that the lower the pH of the formation water, the less likely it is to form CaCO3 and CaSO4 scales. High temperatures will cause the CaCO3 and CaSO4 scales to form. And the higher the pressure, the greater the potential for the formation of CaCO3 and CaSO4 scales.
