Abstract

Smog is one form of land and forest fires, which phenomenon is mostly caused by human activity. Riau Province is one that is often exposed to the haze which is almost every year there. In 2015-2016 Riau Province experienced very severe haze compared to previous years. The community seemed to care less and considered the haze as normal, while the community felt disadvantaged by the smog phenomenon. Therefore community participation is needed in tackling or preventing land and forest fires that cause smog. In this study the researchers wanted to see the actions or reactions of the academics. The actions or reactions of the academics are expected to bridge the interest of ordinary people in seeing the haze phenomenon that occurs. The purpose of this study looks at academics perceptions of smog in Riau in 2015-2016. Using quantitative methods with descriptive statistical approaches. It was found that out of twenty respondents, only 70% made an action or reaction to the phenomenon. The respondent’s form of action or reaction only makes an appeal on their social media network, so it is likely only known by a limited circle. In terms of the intensity of respondents in making action among 70% of respondents were intense in taking those actions. All respondents followed the development of mass media, especially online related to the development of haze, but generally the time spent in following these developments was less than one hour a day.
