Abstract

In speech, speakers should be able to use polite language, both from speakers and opponents, because politeness in speaking can strengthen an interaction. Therefore the author feels interested and researches the principle of politeness in teaching and learning activities in class XI of SMK Negeri 4 Pekanbaru. The problem of this study is (1) What is the maxim of the politeness of the language principle that there are utterances of teaching and learning activities in class XI of SMK Negeri 4 Pekanbaru? (2) What is the speech scale of speech in teaching and learning activities in class XI of SMK Negeri 4 Pekanbaru? The purpose of the research is to describe, explain, analyze and interpret the data in detail regarding the maxims of the politeness principle of language and the politeness scale of language found in the speeches in teaching and learning activities in class XI of SMK Negeri 4 Pekanbaru. The theory that I use is a theory put forward by Leech in Rahardi (2005: 60). The source of data in this study is all the teacher's utterances with students and students' speeches with students in teaching and learning activities in class XI of SMK Negeri 4 Pekanbaru which was recorded when data collection was conducted. This study uses a qualitative approach, the type of field research, descriptive methods and data collection techniques, namely observation techniques, recording techniques, referring techniques, note-taking techniques. From the teacher's speech data with students there are 133 utterances. Speeches that include the maxim of politeness principles amount to 64 speeches namely; (1) the maxim of wisdom is 34 speeches, (2) the maxim of generosity is 1 speech, (3) the maxims of award are 7 utterances, (4) the maxim of simplicity is 2 utterances, (5) the maximal agreement is 15 utterances, (6) the maxim of conclusions total 5 speeches. While speech which includes politeness scale; (1) the scale of losses and profits that adhere to 5 speeches, (2) the scale of choice that obeys 1 speech, (3) the scale of non-compliance that comprise 1 speech, (4) scale of authorization that obeys 1 speech, (5) scale social distance that obeys is 2 utterances. Thus, the maxim of politeness principle that is most found in teacher's speech with students and students with students in class XI of SMK Negeri 4 Pekanbaru, which is found in the maxims of wisdom is 34 utterances, while the politeness scale that is most found is the scale of profit and loss that adheres to total 5 speeches. It is said so because the teacher's speech with students and students with students is more beneficial to the opponent he said than not to the advantage of the opponent he said.
