Abstract

Road widening is one of the actions that can be used as a solution to increase the capacity of the road so that the road will be able to accommodate more traffic volume. The previous road condition was 2 lanes undivided (2/2UD) with a small road capacity and a high degree of saturation so that the road jammed. This study is to compare road capacity before and after widening, know the degree of saturation after road widening and know the effect of road widening on improved traffic performance. The survey was conducted manually using manual counting tool (handtally) and calculated using Manual Method of Indonesian Road Capacity (MKJI, 1997). From the study known road conditions after widening into 4 lanes divided (4/2D). The road capacity after the widening to 6499.31 smp/h. The degree of saturation after widening on weekdays was 0.24 and on holidays was 0.23. And the degree of saturation of pekanbaru-bangkinang cross highway is still below the maximum limit set by the Indonesian Road Capacity Manual (MKJI, 1997) which is < 0.75 categorized as traffic flow does not experience congestion. So with the widening of the road is done to improve traffic performance than before and can accommodate more vehicle capacity and can reduce congestion. To improve this research it is further recommended to use traffic survey tools and add other parameters such as side barriers that can result in traffic being blocked.
