Abstract

In the world of civil engineering construction that is built on peat soil, there are many problems that must be faced, such as the shear strength of the peat soil. This can be dangerous and detrimental to the construction on it. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of bacterial varieties on the shear strength of peat soil using the Microbially Induce Calcite Prepicitation method The original peat soil was taken at the location of Buana Makmur Village km 55 Dayun District, Siak Regency, the bacterial material came from the Agricultural Laboratory of the Islamic University of Riau and additional materials used for stabilization were CaCl2 and Urea from Bandung producers. This research method refers to the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and SNI procedures. The test object was made using a modified sondir tool with a cylindrical shape with a diameter of 3.64 cm and a height of 10.75 cm2, the object was made according to standard compaction at an optimum moisture content of 157%. The shear strength test was carried out after the test object was added with bacterial reagents with variations of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. The data obtained from the results of this test are processed in the form of tables and graphs according to the variation of the addition of bacterial reagents. The effect of the addition of bacterial reagents resulted in a higher shear strength than the original soil, so it was related to the bearing strength of the peat soil. The results of testing the physical properties of the original peat soil are known that the soil originating from the location of Buana Makmur Village km 55 Dayun District, Siak Regency belongs to the type of peat soil with a moisture content of 407.5% and specific weight (Gs) = 1.3. From the results of the shear strength test of the original soil test object with variations in the bacterial reagent mixture at the percentage of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%, the value of the free compressive strength of the original soil specimen + the addition of 0% bacterial reagent is 0.71 kg/cm2, while the highest shear strength value was found in the addition of 5% bacterial reagent of 0.90 kg/cm2.
