Abstract
In Islam, character is a fundamental matter to build people’s characters, therefore the teachers of Islamic studies must be able to build Islamic characters on students. The signs of students’ behaviours previously namely: there were some students chatting when the implementation of teaching and learning activities took place, there were some students who came late when religious activities were conducted, and some of the others still disturbed friends while the teacher was delivering tausiyah. The purpose of this study is to find out the efforts of Islamic studies teachers in building Islamic characters on students of SMPN 1 Sungai Mandau, Siak Regency. The type of research is qualitative. To obtain data, the data collection techniques in form of interviews and documentation were used. After the data were obtained by analyzing data in form of data reduction, data presentation, and verification of data, then several conclusions were drawn as follows: first, the classroom learning activity was in accordance with syllabus, lesson plan, and learning method. Second, it was through extracurricular activities such as Rohis and Scout. Third, it was through exemplary so that the teacher becomes a direct role model for what s/he does including coming to school on time. Fourth, it was through habituation methods such as routine activities, pickets, applying 5S, praying and reading verses together before starting learning, performing dhuha, zuhur, and ashar prayers in congregation and other religious activities.
