Abstract
One of the important things and an aspect that must be taken into account in drilling activities is drilling mud. Drilling mud is a material that is used for several things, such as as a drill bit lubricant, a medium for lifting cuttings, protecting the walls of the borehole (mud cake), and maintaining formation pressure. Based on the basic material, drilling mud has several types, one of which is Oil Based Mud. Oil Based Mud usually uses diesel oil as the basic material for its manufacture. However, the dwindling oil reserves and the high price of diesel oil have made almost all industrial activities, especially drilling activities, look for alternatives other than diesel oil. In this study, rubber seed oil will be tested for its effectiveness as a drilling mud base material. Diesel fuel and rubber seed oil were used in this study as the main ingredients for oil based mud. This study uses an experimental method by utilizing rubber seed oil as an alternative to oil-based mud. Oil based mud made from rubber seed oil is expected to be more effective and better than diesel, which is the main ingredient of oil based mud used in the field. This oil based mud test uses 6 samples of mud with different oil water ratios, namely 60/40, 70/30 and 80/20 to test the parameters of density, rheology, filtration loss and mud cake according to API standard procedures. From the test results for oil based mud with different oil water ratios, the best test results were obtained by diesel oil with an oil water ratio of 70/30, with a density value of 8.2 ppg, plastic viscosity 17 cp, yield point 22 lb/100 ft², gel strength 4/4 lb/100 ft², and 15 ml filtrate loss and 1 mm thick mud cake. while the other base oils are still in good value for oil based mud. So, it can be concluded that diesel-based oil-based mud has better performance than pertadex base oil, new oil and used oil for laboratory scale. Rubbber seed oil has potential to be base oil material for oil based mud, but must be added more additive to improve the parameter that not accordance with API Standart.
