Abstract

Palm oil shells are one of the wastes that can be used as activated carbon, the amount reaches 60% of the core oil production which is grayish black, irregular in shape and has a fairly high hardness. The chemical constituents of oil palm shells are lignin 29.4%, cellulose 26.6% and hemicellulose 27.7%. Activated carbon is a compound based on carbon or charcoal that has been treated and has a high porosity and a large surface area so that it can be used as an effective absorbent for wastewater. To determine the effect of adding the activated carbon additive to palm shells, a test was carried out with activated carbon concentrations of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5%. For filtration loss, use a LPLT (Low Pressure Low Temperature) filter press. And for free water, it was determined using a measuring cup filled with 250 ml of cement suspension. Let stand for 2 hours until there is free water on the top of the measuring cup. From the filtration loss test with the activated carbon additive of palm kernel shells, the results that are said to be feasible are 1%, 1.5% and 2%. It can lower the filtration loss. However, according to the statement above, only 1%, 1.5% and 2% concentration additions are permitted in the filtration loss because they are below 250 cc. Free water testing with the addition of palm kernel shell activated carbon additives with concentrations used in this study, namely, 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5%. Judging from the results of the study that the more additives added to activated carbon oil palm shells, the less free water will be. according to the statement above, the test being tested is still in the free water range.
