Abstract

Paraffin wax that is deposited during the production and transportation of oil can cause blockages in the pipeline and can increase the cost of oil production. Several methods to overcome the problem of wax deposition are conventional mechanical, thermal, and chemical methods. One of the effective ways that can degrade wax deposits on the inner pipe wall is by using microbiological materials, namely bacteria that have clastic hydrocarbon properties which are able to live on waxed crude oil media. Bacteria is an alternative that can degrade paraffin wax in crude oil.The first step in this study was to test Pseudomonas sp. bacteria seeds were able to grow on light crude oil media by incubation at 37°C. Then make physical observations of the bacteria, then determine the differential gram staining on the bacteria to determine the bacteria into gram-positive or gram-negative groups. Testing the ability of bacteria to degrade paraffin wax in crude oil by injecting Pseudomonas sp bacterial suspension into the test media that has been deposited by wax. The results after incubation showed the growth of bacterial colonies on light crude oil which indicated that the Pseudomonas sp bacterial colonies had successfully lived and could thrive on the media. Degradation of wax was successfully carried out by Pseudomonas sp bacterial colonies through the results of the specific gravity test which found that there was a decrease from 0.835 to 0.799, then for the API value previously 37,961 it increased to 45,596, and for the Cold point value before being treated using Pseudomonas sp 31 bacteria. C, after treatment it drops to 29˚C, pour point before 40˚C treatment drops to 35˚C.
