Abstract

This study aims to describe the existence of Gordang Sambilan music which is viewed from the aspect of fungtion in the wider community especially in Sialang Sakti Tenayan Raya district Pekanbaru city Riau province. The theory of function used by the author is to determine the function of Gordang Sambilan music (means of emotional expression, entertainment facilitas, communication media, symbolic representation or ethnic identities, media for physical reactions, media for ratifying social institutions and religius rituals, cultural continuity and community integration media) is the theory of Alan P Merriam (1964: 209). The method used by the author in this study is a qualitative method which is carried out by describing and describing matters relating to a situation. Data collection techniques used are observation techniques, interview techniques and documentation techniques. Data analysis by means of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results obtained by research in this study indicate that the function of Gordang Sambilan music in people’s lives, especially the Mandailing ethnic community in Sialang Sakti Tenayan Raya district Pekanbaru city Riau province is as a means of emotional expression, as a means of entertainment, as a medium of community, as a symbolic representation or as a means of expression ethnic identity, as a medium for physical reaction, as a medium for legalizing social institutions and religious rituals, as cultural continuity and as a medium for integrating society.
