Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out student‟s writing ability in components of writing and to know how does portfolio support their writing. The researcher expected the students would be able to wrote good paragraph and considered the components of writing well. The components are content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanic. The design of the research is a qualitative design. This research gave the description about analysis of students‟ ability in writing descriptive text of seventh grade of SMP YLPI Marpoyan Pekanbaru. The researcher used two rater to analyze students‟ writing test based on scoring rubric of writing, and used interview to support the data of the used of portfolio assessment in writing process. The result of the study showed that students‟ writing of descriptive text was categorized as good level (79,3). There was one student got high score and one student got low score. In other hand, based on the rater score it was found that students who got excellent in writing (12 students ), who got good in writing (6 students), and who got average in writing (2 students). The result of students writing 79,3 (good). From the result of students‟ ability in writing descriptive text above the researcher conclude that in writing descriptive text the students got challenges on punctuation, spelling, capitalization and organization. In the other hand, the result in the use of portfolio assessment is the teacher not used it as the media to assess students‟ writing ability.
