Abstract

Psychological factors that have an important role in the development of body dysmorphic disorder are self-esteem. A person who is too obsessed with his body shape, which is considered difficult even though the disability is not realized by others, is one of the characteristics of body dysmorphic disorder tendencies, while other signs of the emergence of body dysmorphic disorder tendencies are low self-esteem and having a negative self-concept. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between self-esteem and the tendency to body dysmorphic disorder. This study uses a correlational quantitative method with a sampling technique that is accidental sampling with a subject of 387 female students in xxx. The results of the correlation test between self-esteem variables and the tendency of body dysmorphic disorder with Pearson product moment analysis showed a probability number (sig 2-tailed) 0.000 (p <0.005) which proved that the second variable had a significant negative relationship with a correlation value of -0.680. This means that the higher the self-esteem, the lower the tendency for body dysmorphic disorder, and conversely, the lower the self-esteem, the higher the tendency for body dysmorphic disorder.
