Abstract

The background of this research is that there are still errors in the use of punctuation marks in research proposals by students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, FKIP, UIR. The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze, interpret, and conclude forms of punctuation errors in research proposals by students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Islamic University of Riau. The method used in this research is content analysis method. The results of this study indicate that the form of errors in the use of punctuation in the research proposals of students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, FKIP, UIR in the form of errors in the use of punctuation marks again 497 error cases, including the error of a period (.) found 116 errors, a comma (, ) opens 226 errors, colon (:) opens 46 errors, semicolon (;) opens 11 errors, ellipsis (...) opens 2 errors, brackets ((...)) opens 21 errors, sign single quote ('...') opens 9 errors, quotation mark (“...") opens 27 errors, question mark (?) opens 1 error, exclamation mark (!) opens 2 errors, and dash (-) opened 36 errors. Based on the results of the study, it can be said that the most common form of errors in using punctuation marks is the use of commas (226 errors). This is because comma punctuation has the most usage rules compared to other punctuation. Meanwhile, the least common form of punctuation errors was the use of question marks (one error).
