Abstract
Surfactant is a chemical injection that can be used in an oil field with the aim of increasing the displacement efficiency in the reservoir. Surfactants that are commonly used are chemical-based commercial surfactants that have negative impacts on the environment. In this study, vegetable oil was tested as an alternative raw material in making surfactants, namely the essential oil of sweet orange peel (citrus sinensis). The bioactive content such as pectin contained in sweet orange peel essential oil is 20-35% which is composed of pectinic acid which can be used as MES (methyl ester sulfonate). In order to find out more about the characteristics of the essential oil surfactant of sweet orange peel, a research such as foaming test, acid number test, saponification test and HLB number test are conducted. Also to determine the stability of the emulsion from the MES phase test of the resulting surfactant. The results of the MES surfactant characteristic test of sweet orange peel essential oil have a foam stability of 84.44%, with an acid number of 5.04%. and the saponification of 1.009 mgKOH/MES as well as the HLB number 16, which means it is water soluble (water solube), can also be said to be an o/w elmusifier (oil in water), and can act as a stabilizer. After testing the phase on the MES surfactant sweet orange peel essential oil with concentrations of 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7%, 1% and 5% and salinity of 15,000 ppm at 60°C, the emulsion phase that occurs at each concentration is Winson 1 type or lower phase, namely the surfactant is more soluble in the water than oil (o/w) therefore its nature as a displacment is able to push oil.
