Abstract

Filtration loss is one of the problems that occur during drilling operations which is detrimental to the drilling process if not handled properly. To overcome the problem of Filtration loss, the drilling mud will be added with certain additives that are useful for reducing formation damage and minimizing mud cake. One of the additives used to deal with filter loss problems is fly ash. The good nature of fly ash in absorbing water can be useful for binding air in the drilling mud so that it can be expected to reduce the occurrence of filtration losses in drilling wells. Among the materials that contain fly ash are oil palm fly ash and coal fly ash where both fly ash will be used in research. Variations in the composition of oil palm fly ash and coal fly ash used were 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5% ,6% and 7%. The effect of oil palm fly ash and coal fly ash on the value of filtration loss will be investigated in the drilling mud laboratory and it is hoped that the results of this study can provide information about the effect of these additives on the value of filtration loss so that it can be applied to the oil and gas industry. Fly ash has good adsorption properties. can reduce the mud filtrate and reduce the thickness of the mud cake at the addition of each concentration of coal fly ash and oil palm fly ash. From the results of the filtrate loss and thickness of the mud cake, it still meets API standards. From the comparison of the two fly ash, coal fly ash has advantages over oil palm fly ash because of the large silica composition of coal compared to oil palm, silica which contains adsorbent properties and can reduce the value of filtration losses and mud cakes.
