Abstract

This study aims to determine the intercultural communication that occurs between ethnic Minang and ethnic Batak and the process of adaptation of ethnic Minang and ethnic Batak in getting to know different traders in cultural backgrounds. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The subjects in this study were ethnic Minang and ethnic Batak traders who sold in Pasar Bawah, Pekanbaru City. In this study, there were six traders who were taken as informants, namely three from the Batak ethnicity and three from the Minang ethnic group. traders who become informants are traders who have been selling for more than 3 to 5 years. This study aims to determine how the intercultural communication process carried out by ethnic Minang and Batak traders and aims to determine the process of cultural adaptation of actors from the Minang and Batak ethnic groups. The results showed that there were 2 informants who had problems when communicating between cultures. Meanwhile, in the adaptation process, the adaptation time varies, including those that pass through the long, medium and short term stages. The use of Indonesian and regional languages are each used as a communication tool and used at certain times. In this case, there are no factors that are too serious for informants to adapt to this low market environment. Overall it just takes time to learn and understand the characteristics of each trader.
