Abstract

The existence of the Islamic University of Riau makes it a central center around it in the activities of an education center at the university level. So that the surrounding community began to be interested in taking advantage of the opportunity by opening a business or trading around the Islamic University of Riau. Thus the trade and service sector is increasing every year. An increase in the percentage of land use in the trade and service sectors will reduce the area of undeveloped land and cause land limitations around the Islamic University of Riau. This study aims to determine the characteristics of trade and service activities around the Islamic University of Riau in order to serve as a basis for spatial planning of trade and service activities. This study uses a deductive approach with a quantitative-qualitative descriptive method. This method is used to identify the existing land use around the Islamic University of Riau. As well as identifying the characteristics of trade and service activities by looking at the types of traders' activities, then for the results of the questionnaire from trading and service activities using frequency distribution analysis. Based on the research, it was found that the existing land use around the Islamic University of Riau is dominated by residential areas (22,73%), while the characteristics of trade and services around the Islamic University of Riau are dominated by traders selling food (33%), most of the traders using permanent kiosks (40%). %), the average time of service provided from morning to evening, the nature of the services of permanent traders, and trading capital around the Islamic University of Riau is less than twenty million. Trade and service activities around the Islamic University of Riau are one of the alternatives as the main livelihood for survival.
