Abstract

Waste is waste generated from a production process, both industrial and domestic (household). One of the household wastes that is produced a lot is egg shells. This study was conducted to reduce the use of sand as paving blocks with the use of eggshell waste, the aim is to determine the effect on compressive strength and water absorption in paving blocks. The use of eggshell waste as a partial substitution of sand with a mixed composition of 0%, 7%, 10% and 15% of the total sand. Making paving blocks using molds measuring 20 x 10 x 6 cm and testing is carried out after 28 days of age using the SNI 03-0691-1996 method on concrete bricks (paving blocks). The results showed that the average compressive strength of paving blocks with the use of eggshell waste as a partial substitute for sand decreased with each variation. In the 0% and 7% variations, the compressive strength values are 207.72 kg/cm2 and 172.31 kg/cm2, both of which are B quality. While for the paving blocks at the 10% and 15% variations, the compressive strength values are 129.82 kg. /cm2 and 121.56 kg/cm2 which fall into grades C and D. Water absorption of paving blocks for variations of 0% and 0% is 9.32% and 9.89% which are categorized as D quality, while for variations of 10% and 15% get the results of 10.24% and 10.73%, because the maximum limit of water absorption is at 10%, so that variations of 10% and 15% are not included in the quality requirements. This shows that the greater the use of eggshell waste as a partial substitute for sand, the higher the percentage of water absorption in paving blocks.
