Abstract

One of the factors that causes a decrease in the rate of oil production from a well is water coning. Water coning is a condition around a well hole where the oil and water boundary rises to form a cone reaching the lowest perforation point, which will cause water to be produced earlier so that the increase in water production will be faster. One way of dealing with the amount of water produced and entering the pump is to control the production rate. This can be done by applying VSD to the ESP well. The VSD can change the motor rotation speed by changing the AC Power frequency before it is sent into the ESP motor below the surface. The use of VSDs allows pump operation over a wider frequency range. Changing the frequency will affect pump performance, and can increase the flexibility of the pump. The more the production rate varies, the more we can find the amount of water cut formed by using the wiggins method. The Wiggins method (three-phase IPR equivalence) assumes that each phase can be treated separately, so that the oil rate (Qo) and water rate (Qw) can be calculated separately. Well X which is a well that uses ESP which is operated at a frequency of 60 Hz has a flow rate of 1309 BFPD and a water cut of 98.33%, with a water cut of that size causing very high water production problems, then the pump rotation frequency is reduced to 40 Hz using the VSD tool obtained a fluid flow rate of 872.67 BFPD and the water cut decreased to 95.6%, using this method well X experienced an increase in oil production from 21.85 BOPD to 38.3 BOPD.
