Abstract

The sand problem is one of the most common problems, especially in unconsolidated formations. Sand problems can occur due to several factors such as drawdown pressure, water coning and weakening of rock cementation, the impact caused can cause damage to downhole and surface equipment. This research was conducted in the field Y well X which is located in East Kalimantan. Well completion X is an open hole with a horizontal well, the purpose of this research is to optimize the gravel pack design combined with a slotted liner. This method was chosen because the previous method, namely the wire-wrapped screen (WWS) was not able to withstand the fall of the formation which caused damage to WWS so that sand prevention is needed. problem is not optimal. Therefore, the application of a slotted liner can be used as an option because it has the advantage of being able to withstand abrasion from formation collapse. However, the slotted liner method still has a gap in the production of fine-sized sand, therefore it is necessary to combine it with a slotted liner in the hope that the particles that cannot be filtered out by the slotted liner can be filtered by the gravel pack. The design of the gravel pack and slotted liner methods is quite simple. First, do a rock sampling to find out how big the sand diameter is as a reference for choosing a gravel pack. Based on the average grain size of 0.0045 Inch, a gravel size of 20/40 is required, and a gravel volume of 118.78 bbl is required to fill the horizontal area of a 530 ft long well. In order to avoid bridging, the gravel installation uses the reverse circulation method. After the slotted liner and gravel pack were installed, the PI decreased by 6.4%, and the oil production rate from 339.11 bbl/day to 318.7 bbl/day.
