Abstract
Oil and water emulsions often occur during the petroleum transportation process from the reservoir to the gathering station. In overcoming the problem of oil and water emulsions, demulsification methods are often used, one of them is the chemical method. This study aims to create an organic demulsifier formula as a substitute for commercial chemicals in overcoming the problem of emulsions. One of the alternative ingredients used in the manufacture of organic demulsifier formulas in this study is wuluh starfruit which has a very high citric acid content, which is 92.6-133.8 meq of acid/100 g. In this study, an organic demulsifier was made using the saponification method, then a demulsification test was carried out using the bottle test method to see the effectiveness of the demulsifier with various temperatures, such as 30 ᵒC, 60 ᵒC with the demulsifier concentration parameters used were 1 ml, 3 ml, and 5 ml and testing the functional groups contained in the content of star fruit by using the FTIR Spectrophotometer. From the results of the research, the highest separation value was obtained in both local demulsifier and commercial demulsifier samples at a temperature of 60ᵒC with a concentration of 5 ml separating 25 ml of water with pH levels of 12.3 and 7.7. Based on the functional group analysis from the FTIR graph, organic demulsifiers have 11 more OH groups than commercial demulsifiers which only have 1 OH. OH groups are very important in overcoming emulsions because they can dissolve in water to form hydrogen bonds with water and have polar properties.
