Abstract

This research is entitled the analysis of euphemisms in the headlines of the Dumai Pos newspaper. The problem in this study is what are the forms of euphemism contained in the headlines of the January 2020 edition of the Dumai Pos newspaper. This study aims to describe the forms of euphemism contained in the headlines of the January 2020 edition of the Dumai Pos newspaper. The theory put forward by Sutarman (2013). The research method used is the content analysis method. Data collection techniques are documentation techniques and hermeneutic techniques. Data analysis techniques used were data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results of the study are the use of abbreviations of 8 data, use of 3 data metaphors, use of absorption words of 11 data, use of foreign terms 18 data, and use of data perifrasis 16. Data interpretation in this study is the use of euphemisms in the headlines of the Dumai Pos newspaper, which mostly occurs in the use of 18 foreign terms because foreign terms are not only disguising meanings but are also used to mention words to make it easier, shorter and more economical. The conclusion in this study is the use of abbreviations as much as 8 data, the use of metaphors as much as 3 data, the use of absorption words as much as 11 data, the use of foreign terms as much as 18 data, the use of perifrasis as much as 16 data. The things that underlie the use of euphemism itself are away from the use of uses that can cause panic or fear, do not offend, insult, or demean a person, do not offend hurtful things, replace words that are considered taboo, forbidden, vulgar, having a negative image, keeping a secret, respecting or respecting others, and cynicism or criticism.
