Abstract

Problem based learning is one of the learning models that is in accordance with the scientific learning approach. This study examines the application of the problem based learning model to the learning of persuasive text structures in class VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Siak Hulu. The problems studied are (1) How is the learning of persuasive text structures in class VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Siak Hulu before and after the problem based learning model is applied? (2) Are there differences in the learning of persuasive text structures before and after applying the problem based learning model? The theories used in this study are Mulyasa (2014), Sani (2015) and other supporting theories. this research is using experimental method. The source of data in this study is the learning of persuasive text structures in class VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Siak Hulu. the type of research is field research and the research approach is quantitative. to collect data the author uses observation techniques and test techniques. The results of this study indicate that (1) persuasive text structure learning in class VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Siak Hulu before applying the problem based learning model to the control group, students only get an explanation from the teacher so students are not motivated to practice their critical thinking skills. learning persuasive text structure in class VIII SMP Negeri 4 Siak Hulu after applying the problem based learning model to the experimental group, learning centered on students so that students' critical thinking skills increase. (2) the results of persuasive text structure learning in class VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Siak Hulu before applying the problem based learning model to the control group were the average score of the control group pretest by 51.67 and the average score of the control group's posttest was 71.32 which meant an increase in learning persuasive text structure of 19.65. Persuasive text structure learning in class VIII SMP Negeri 4 Siak Hulu after applying the problem based learning model to the experimental group is the average score of the experimental group pretest of 54.74 and the average score of the experimental group posttest is 81.03 which means an increase in persuasive text structure learning by 26.29.
