Abstract

The number of Thailand college students at Islamic University of Riau tends to increase every year. Islamic University of Riau is the choice of students from Thailand to continue their studies, and Islamic University of Riau is one of the universities with the highest number of Thailand college students in Riau. As foreign students the differences that exist between cultures in Indonesia and Thailand require Thailand college students to adapt. In the adaptation process Thailand colllege students have the possibility to experience a culture shock, that can complicate their adaptation and socialization process. This study intends to investigate scientifically the relation of culture shock with social skills in Thailand college students at Islamic University Of Riau. Subjects in this study are college students from Thailand at Islamic University of Riau who still active learning as many as 61 college students by using saturated sampling technique. Instruments forcollect the data in this study is the scale of culrure shock and scale of social skills. Data were analyzed by using product moment correlation analysis with SPSS 23.0 for windows program. The result of correlation analysis of product moment obtained correlation coefficient of -0.411 with p = 0.001 (p <0.05) which indicate that there is significant negative correlation between culture shock and social skills, means that students who have higher social skills have a lower chance of experiencing a culture shock, and the other way around in Thailand college students at Islamic University of Riau.
