Abstract
This study aims to find out firsthand how the function of gebane music in the Air Molek Village Community, Pasir Turtle District, Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province. The theory of music used is the theory of M.Soeharto (1992:86), the theory of traditional music used is the theory of Sedyawati (1992:23), the theory of the function of music used is the theory of Merriam (2013:22) which explains that the function of music is divided into: into 4, namely: 1) the function of gebane as an emotional expression, (2) the function of gebane as an aesthetic observer, (3) the function of gebane as entertainment, (4) the function of gebane as a means of communication, (5) the function of gebane as a symbol, (6) the function of music as a means of communication. physical reactions, (7) the function of music as a social norm (8) the function of gebane as the validation of social and religious institutions, (9) the function of gebane as cultural stability, and (10) the function of gebane as social integrity. The research methodology in this study is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach, while the data collection techniques used are observation and documentation. Based on the observations, the researchers also found 8 functions of music contained in gebane music, including: 1) the function of gebane as an emotional expression, 2) the function of gebane as an aesthetic appreciation, 3) the function of gebane as entertainment, 4) the function of gebane as a means of communication, 5) the function of gebane as a symbol, 6) the function of gebane as the validation of social and religious institutions, 7) the function of gebane as cultural stability, and the function of gebane as social integrity.
