Abstract

The usage of precise amount of Lost Circulation Material (LCM) additive is one of the important factors to decide the effectiveness of drilling process. The commonly use additive in current industry is CMC, PAC and KCL. With the advancement of technology and science, the discovery of very small dimension material is deemed to be possible alternative compared to micro material. Carbon Nanoparticle is a very popular material in nowadays due to its unique physical characteristics such as absorption that will causes the solidification of filter cake as it is able to bond the drilling fluid until the filtrate loss is reduced. Meanwhile, carbon nanoparticle also posses the characteristic of bonding the drilling fluid due its nature of having enormous pores tht are well arranged. Carbon produced by the thermal method, which is called the pyrolysis method. Pyrolysis method is chosen to form carbon from organic material such as palm oil shell as this method is more effective and environtmentally friendly. The carbon undergoes the sonification process to obtain the carbon nanoparticle. To verify the effectiveness of carbon nanoparticles, the nanoparticles undergoes characterization processes such as FTIR, SEM, EDS, Uv-Vis and XRD. To identify the effect of carbon nanoparticles against the filtration loss and mud cake, the drilling mud is tested by addition of 0,5 gr of carbonnanoparticles into the drilling mud using a tool named filter press. According to the result of characterization of process, FTIR it is proven there is existence of the bonding of O-H, C=O, C=C and C-O. the presence of this chemical bond proves that the carbon produced has become nanoparticles, which is called Graphene Oxide (GO). The morphology produced from the testing of SEM indicates that the nanoparticles have bigger and well arranged pores, and the elements contained in the carbon nanoparticles only have C and O. Characterization of Uv-Vis portrays the peak absorption with long frequency, 269 nm, which proves the material is nanoparticle, Graphene Oxide. The result of characterization XRD revealed the material with the shape of amorphous and there is peak graphite at 26,64°, this indicates that there is good formation of carbon nanoparticles. After that, the test result of mud with the addition of 0,5 gr of carbon nanoparticles is able to reduce filtration loss from 13,9 ml to 10,8 ml, same goes to the mud cake which shows reduction from 2 mm to 1,2 mm.
