Abstract
Parents who enter middle adulthood (40-60 years) will experience various crises caused by declining physical changes, menopause, divorce, the departure of children from home due to marriage, work or school away from home. At this time, parents will feel sadness, emptiness and loneliness because the child has grown up, lives independently and does not live at home anymore, this is commonly known as empty nest syndrome. This study aims to determine the differences in empty nest syndrome in middle-aged men and women in the Serai Wangi Village, Talang Muandau District. This research is a comparative quantitative research. The sample in this study amounted to 83 fathers and mothers who live in the village of Serai Fragrant aged 40-60 years and have children who no longer live at home because they are married, work or go to school far from home. The sampling technique used is Non Prebobality Sampling with Purposive Sampling technique. The data collection method used an empty nest syndrome scale based on the theoretical concept of (Mbaeze and Ukwandu, 2011) with a total of 27 items, with a reliability value of = 0.898. Statistical analysis used in this study was independent sample t-test with a value of t = -3.576 and a sig of 0.001 (p<0.005). This shows that there is a significant difference in empty nest syndrome in middle-aged men and women in the Serai Wangi Village, Talang Muandau District. Empty nest syndrome in women is higher than in men where the mean empty nest syndrome for women is 74.45 while the mean for men is 61.20.
