Abstract

This study investigates the effect of additives activated carbon oil palm shell on filtration loss in water based mud. The Activated carbon has a good pores, adsorption properties and non-toxic. The adsorption properties of activated carbon oil palm shell can play a role in controlling filtration loss. So, the activated carbon oil palm shell has the potential as an additive for drilling mud. Determine the potential of activated palm oil shells, drilling mud testing was conducted. And also testing on regenerated activated carbon (reactivation) to obtain volume filtrate and cake mud values with the same concentration of 1 %wt, and variations in the length of heating time for each sample for 0 minutes (without heating), 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes at 200ºC. Determine the potential of activated carbon oil palm shell, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) test was carried out. Based on the results of testing at the Islamic University of Riau Drilling Laboratory, activated carbon can potentially control filtration loss. After that, testing on regenerated (reactivation) activated carbon oil palm shell obtains a volume filtrate and mud cake values which is decrease as the heating time increase on activated carbon and results of SEM testing show a decrease in the size of the activated carbon granules around 21%.
