Abstract
This study aims to improve the learning process and improve the understanding of mathematical concepts of class VII2 students of Muhammadiyah Middle School 1 Pekanbaru through the application of the Think Pair Share (TPS) type of cooperative learning model. The research subjects were 24 students. The study was conducted on March 1-29 2019. This type of research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of two cycles. The instruments of data collection used in the study are teacher and student observation sheets, and test sheets for understanding mathematical concepts. Data collection techniques used are tests, observations, interviews, and observations. The concept understanding test in this study was analyzed descriptively qualitatively which showed that there was an increase in student activity in which students were more enthusiastic and focused in concentrating on learning, daring to ask and express their opinions while discussing, while quantitative data analysis was obtained from the average understanding of mathematical concepts students in increasing understanding of mathematical concepts seen from the percentage understanding of mathematical concepts of students on a base score of 54.85%, in the first cycle had a percentage understanding of mathematical concepts 77.77% and in the second cycle had a percentage understanding of mathematical concepts 84.16%. So it can be concluded that the application of the TPS cooperative learning model can improve the learning process and improve the understanding of the mathematical concepts of class VII2 students of Muhammadiyah Middle School 1 in the 2018/2019 academic year, especially in line and angle material.
