Abstract
In the last few years, there was a smoke haze event during the dry season in Riau. It caused by intentionally or unintentionally burning land that was carried out. The Riau Provincial Government has made various efforts to prevent and deal with these fires, Especially in Sungai Buluh Village, Singingi Hilir District, Kuantan Singingi Regency. The purpose of this study is to see the role of the community in preventing and overcoming forest fires. The results of this study illustrate that the community's background in burning land is caused by economic factors. Without burning, land management requires a lot of money, so it is difficult for them to reach it. In this case, community participation in preventing and overcoming forest fires is still carried out based on an analysis of the theory of community reactions to environmental crimes, so that to prevent the forest fire, a formal reaction appears consisting of punishment, and an informal reaction consisting of social control. The author suggests that in reducing forest fires, a good coordination and commitment in implementation and activities program from the government are needed, and the efforts of community in solving forest fire from the source by handling planning process, implementation and evaluation processes are also needed, so that the activities being relevant and the role of community more optimally.
