Abstract
Writing is one of the productive skills which need to be learned by language learners. One type of writing cotrolled is controlled composition. The students are given a passage to work with: they do not have to be concerned with things like content, organization, finding ideas, and forming sentences. Usually writing the passage and making a few specific changes of a grammatical or structure nature. So they will have a good grammatical or structure awareness. The research was an axperimental research which was consisted of one experimental group. The population of this research was all of the third year students of SMP YLPI Pekanbaru. The population was 58 students. The researcher took IX2 as the sample by using purposive sampling. There were 29 samples. The research instrument was writing test. The result showed that there were a significant effect of the mean score before pre test and post test. It was 75.5 to 85.38. Then, the degree of freedom was 56. Based on 56 (the degree of freedom) the researcher got t1 (1.67) on the level of significant 5% and t1 (3.29) on the level of significant 1%. Then the value of t0 (Ttest) was 8.42. so it can be concluded that 1.67 ˂ 8.42 ˃ 3.29. it means that the null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other word, there were a significant effect of controlled composition technique toward the third year student writing ability of recount text at SMP YLPI Pekanbaru.
