Abstract

This research is intended to analyze the transaction costs that occur in coffee shop SMEs in the city of Pekanbaru. It is known that the neoclassical view considers markets to run perfectly without any costs (costless) because buyers (consumers) have perfect information and sellers (producers) compete with each other resulting in low prices (Stone, et.al., in Yustika, 2012). But in the view of New Institutional Economics, transaction costs are not zero. Transaction costs are a concept that explains the costs incurred when making transactions outside of production costs. This will affect the selling price so that there is a link between high transaction costs and the selling price of goods. Transaction costs arise because they are caused by the inefficiency of an institution's design and result in higher transaction costs being generated. Coffee commodity is an industry that has a long chain from upstream to downstream. The phenomenon highlighted is the coffee shop business which is part of the downstream chain. In economic activity, there will be various kinds of transaction costs that were not taken into account before, but are always there. Because the market in exchanging does not only take into account how much it costs to produce but also has to calculate how much it costs to make exchanges/transactions.
