Abstract

The study of language is a study that will never end for discussion. In fact, any language community is not free from the phenomenon of euphemism. This is because in language in everyday life, people use language by using certain considerations and motivations. The problem studied in this study is how is the form of euphemism in the Opinion Rubric of the Kompas newspaper, October 1-31 2019 Edition. The purpose of this research is to describe the form of euphemism in the opinion rubric of the Kompas newspaper. The approach in this research is qualitative, with the type of library research and descriptive or explanatory methods, and uses data collection techniques in the form of hermeneutics. The data analysis technique in this study is to classify data based on the problems in this study, and the last one is to do data analysis. From the results of data analysis in this study, the authors conclude that there are 7 forms of euphemisms taken from foreign languages, 7 data for euphemisms using longer expressions or descriptions, 72 data for euphemisms avoiding hard meanings. The form of euphemism that is often found is to avoid harsh understanding, because the media uses these euphemisms to avoid unwanted responses.
