Abstract

The phenomenon of concern for not being up to date on what is happening is known as Fear of Missing Out or abbreviated as FoMO. FoMO is one of the phenomena of intrapersonal communication where someone feels worried, anxious, and afraid if they miss the information circulating on TikTok social media. In addition, the length of time Generation Z accesses TikTok social media is one of the factors that triggers FoMO. This study aims to determine the description of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in Generation Z users of the TikTok application in Pekanbaru, with a total sample of 400 people of Generation Z in Pekanbaru. The sampling technique in the study used the purposive sampling technique. The data collection technique used the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) scale consisting of 15 items proposed by Przybylski, et al (2013) and adapted by Alfanny Maulany Yusra (2021). The analysis used is descriptive statistical analysis. The results showed Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in generation Z of TikTok application users in Pekanbaru the majority were in the high category, namely 36% as many as 144 people. Based on gender, there was no significant difference in the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) category between men and women. Based on age, there was no difference in the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) category between respondents aged 12-27 years.
