Abstract

This study is based on the weakening of the repertoire of languages or cultures that still use the Banjar Hulu language. The Banjar Hulu culture is currently starting to have its authenticity formed due to cultural exchange and modernization. Therefore, this studyfocuses on the categories and functions. Categories and social functions of the oral literary text of the Banjar Hulu language folklore: reinforcing the local tradition of the nation’s culture This aims to describe the categories and social functions of the oral literary text of the Banjar Hulu folklore. The study that wasconducted was descriptive with a qualitative type of study. Sources of data come from informants withvalidated informant criteria. Data collection was carried out carefully. The data were analyzed using reflective techniques with triangulation of sources as a test of data validity. Based on the analysis, it can be seen from the eight folk tales of the Banjar Hulu community that there are three folk tales categorized as legendary, namely Si Angui Durhakak Lawan Khuitan, Haji Arif Nang Wanik, and Radin Pangantin. Furthermore, three stories are categorized as myths, namely Raja Baung, Kucing Balakik Raja and Raja Kungkang. Two folk tales categorized as fairy tales, namely Datuk Muning and Datuk Suban lawan Kyai Arsanaya. The folklore of the Banjar Hulu community functions as a means of developing community integrity, social control, strengthening social solidarity, forming group identities, forming communal harmonization
