Abstract

High school students in their teens are difficult to make decisions, because at this phase teenagers are still classified as unstable and doubtful, therefore in determining a decision, students should use or consider options based on ability, experience, knowledge and also those closest to them. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between family functioning and high school students' decision making in choosing college majors. The method of data collection in this study was to use the family functioning scale in this study modified by researchers from the scale compiled by Herawaty (2013), which was compiled based on the dimensions proposed by Epstein, Baldwin, and Bishop (in Sun & Cheung, 1997) which consisted of 45 items and using a decision-making scale that was modified by the researcher from the scale designed by Rosalami (2017) based on the aspects proposed by Rivai (2007) with a total of 43 items. The sample in this study consisted of 154 high school students class 12 Bangkinang city obtained through nonprobability sampling technique, namely purposive sampling technique. Hypothesis testing was carried out using Spearman Rho analysiscorrelation, the data obtained were 0.636. The results of statistical analysis show that there is a significant relationship in a positive direction between family functioning and high school students' decision making in choosing college majors.
