Abstract

S50C steel is widely used in a variety of applications involving welding. As with other carbon steels, welding processes that involve heating and cooling can cause structural and grain changes. Inhomogeneous structures due to welding will store residual stresses causing the material to become harder and reduce toughness. To restore the toughness of the welded metal, Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) needs to be done. In addition, it is known that polarity also affects the mechanical properties of the welded metal, therefore in this study the effect of polarity and PWHT on the tensile strength and toughness of S50C steel was observed. Tensile and impact tests were carried out to obtain the mechanical properties of the material. Observation with an optical microscope is needed to determine changes in the microstructure that occur due to welding and heat treatment. Welding carried out was SMAW with DC+ and DC- polarity, then PWHT was carried out at a temperature of 750°C, holding time of 70 minutes and cooling in air. The results showed that the highest tensile strength, elongation and toughness were obtained in specimens welded with DC+ polarity and subjected to PWHT, namely 330,461 MPa for tensile strength, 5.604% for elongation and 1.14 J/mm2 (impact value)
