Abstract

The purpose in this research examined to know the influence of discussion method on speaking skill of class 7 students in Islamic education lesson at junior high school 12 Pekanbaru. This research used quantitative with correlational approach. The sampling technique used slovin formula with margin error 5%. The population in this research 205 Islamic students in class 7 with 135 students as sample. Data collection technique used questionnaire and documentation. Research finding showed that the hypothesis about there was any influence of discussion method on students’ speaking skill was accepted with significant score 0.000. The level in using discussion method in Islamic education lesson was 0.870 or 87.0%. It could be explained that when discussion method was increased, it could be predicted that students speaking skill would increase. Before the application of discussion method, the level of students’ speaking skill was in 5.034, it meant that students’ speaking skill was in very low category. The discussion method influenced students’ speaking skill was in strong enough (0.447 or 44.7%) and it was in range (0.40-0.599), meanwhile the other 55.3% was influenced by others factors. Also, the relationship between discussion method and students’ speaking skill was in 0.668 or 66.8% R score (0.668) that was in range 0.60 – 0.799 with strong category. It meant that there was strong relationship between discussion methods on students’ speaking skill of class 7 in Islamic education lesson at junior high school 12 Pekanbaru.
