Abstract
Riau Malays are the dominant ethnic group in Riau province, the distinctive character makes identity of the Malays different from others. Scientific studies are needed to determine character of the original Riau Malay people through study of Indigenous Psychology. The purpose of this research is to develop the concept of Riau Malay character and its measuring tools. The method used in this research are; literature review, expert interview to unify the concept, content validity test analysis, and construct validity test with Explaratory Factor Analysis approach. Based on the results of a literature review and expert interviews obtained 85 characteristics of the Riau Malay characters which were developed into 170 items. The number of samples in this study was 137 people with a sampling technique using cluster random sampling. The results of the analysis of validity and reliability there are 46 valid items with a range of Aiken's V coefficient (0.833-1) and a Crombach Alpha reliability value of 0.844. There are 6 factors of character concept of the Riau Malays; Social Sensitiveity, Civility, Politeness, Obedience to parents, Religiousness, and obedience to leaders.
