Abstract

Abstract This research is entitled Medicine Mantra in Bugis Society, Tembilahan Hilir Village, Tembilahan District: A Semiotic Study of Roland Barthes. The tradition of medicine in the Bugis community of Tembilahan Hilir Village, Tembilahan District, until now still believes in using mantras or so-called incantations as a way to get rid of a person's illness. That's why the mantra has become a hereditary tradition. To find out how to study code in social life, a study is needed. One of the studies related to codes is semiotics Barthes (in Lantowa, et al, 2017:131) states that there are five codes consisting of hermeneutic, semitic, symbolic, proaeretic, cultural. The problems of this research are: 1) What are the healing spells in the Bugis Society of Tembilahan Hilir Sub-district, Tembilahan District?, 2) What is the semiotic code of the Medicine Mantra in the Bugis Society of Tembilahan Hilir Sub-district, Tembilahan District? analyzing, interpreting, and concluding what Mantras and the semiotic code of Medicine mantras are in the Bugis Society of Tembilahan Hilir Subdistrict, Tembilahan District. This research can provide benefits both theoretically and practically. This research method uses a descriptive method which is defined as a problem solving procedure being investigated. The theory used in this research is the theory of Roland Barthes. The results of the healing spell research that have been obtained based on the respondents who were respondents in this study have been classified based on the semiotic code of Roland Barthes including the Hermeneutic Code, Semitic Code, Symbolic Code, and Proaeretic Code or Narrative Action Code. The data for the treatment spells include swelling pain spells, stomach pain spells, fire pain spells, ulcer pain spells, eye pain spells, intestinal pain spells, sprains pain spells, liver pain spells, uterine pain spells, cravings spells, sick spells. fever, bone pain spell and toothache spell. Which then the data will be analyzed according to the classification of Roland Barthes' semiotic code. Thus, it can be concluded that the treatment mantra in the community of Tembilahan Hilir Village, Tembilahan District, has a Roland Barthes semiotic code in it, the most dominant of which is in the hermeutic code (HER) and data in the cultural code or referential code (REF).
