Abstract
Writing is one of the English skills that need to be mastered by students. The purposes of this research was to determine whether there is a correlation between the students’ writing motivation and writing ability at second grade of SMPN 37 Pekanbaru. This research used a quantitative design and correlational study. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire adapted from Payne (2012) to measure students’ writing motivation and writing descriptive text test to measure the students’ writing ability. The researcher analyzed the data by using Pearson Product Moment formula of SPSS version 22. The findings of the study revealed that there is a positive correlation between the students’ writing motivation and writing ability. It is obviously proven that the coefficient correlation was 0.505, which is categorized as medium correlation. After testing the hypothesis, the researcher can be inferred that there is a significant correlation between two variables, since the critical value of rvalue was greater than the critical value rtable in significant level 5% (rvalue =0.505 > rtable =0.344). It emphasizes that null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted.
