Abstract

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-CONTROL AND PHUBBING BEHAVIOR IN ADOLESCENTS IN BUKIT RAYA DISTRICT Krisna Sitanggang 178110002 FACULTY OF PSYCHOLOGY ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF RIAU ABSTRACT The presence of smartphones causes changes in behavior patterns, especially in adolescents. Ideally, the task of teenagers is to develop social responsibility/interact with the surrounding environment, but what is happening today is that teenagers have their own world. Teenagers play their smartphones more often than interact with other people around them, even ignore conversations because they are too focused on smartphones. This behavior is known as phubbing behavior. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between self-control and phubbing behavior in adolescents in Bukit Raya District. The data collection method used a scale compiled by the researcher, namely the phubbing behavior scale of 25 items and the self-control scale of 25 items. The sample of this study amounted to 388 adolescents. The sampling technique used purposive sampling technique. The methodology of the data analyzing is used Spearman Rho. The results of statistical analysis showed a correlation of -0.541 with a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.05). This shows that there is a significant relationship with a negative direction between phubbing behavior and self-control in adolescents in Bukit Raya District. This means that the higher the self-control, the lower the phubbing behavior and vice versa. Self-control provides an effective contribution of 47.5% to phubbing behavior, the remaining 52.5% is influenced by other variables.
