Abstract
Asphaltene is often the cause of several operational problems in the field both in upstream and downstream operations due to the tendency of asphaltenes to flocculate and precipitate during natural pressure depletion in primary recovery and gas injection prosess for tertiary recovery. Laboratoty test and field data has proven that, asphaltenes precipitation more easily in light oil rather than heavy oil, even though the heavier oil might have much higher asphaltenes content. This study will focus to analyze the tendency of the asphaltene component which can precipitate when the asphaltene onset pressure (AOP) is reached during natural pressure depletion using compositional simulator. Two light oil samples with API gravity 400 – 41,40 and asphaltene content of less than 2% were used to analyze asphaltene precipitation during pressure depletion. The results of this study have shown that Asphaltenes Onset Pressure (AOP) is surrounding the bubble-point pressure, as bounded within asphaltene precipitation region range between the upper AOP and lower AOP. In other words, asphaltene precipitation begins when approaching the bubble point pressure. The amount of asphaltene precipitation will increase as it approaches the bubble point pressure, where it reaches maximum at or very near to bubble-point pressure
