Abstract

This research is motivated by the ability of students to write official letters that are not in accordance with the provisions that have been set. Official letter is a written communication tool that concerns the interests of official duties and activities in an agency, in this case students are required to know and be able to write official letters based on the structure of official letters, spelling and punctuation. Research problems: (1) How is the ability of class VIII.1 students of SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru in writing the correct systematic official letter? (2) How is the ability of class VIII.1 students of SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru to write spelling in official letters? The data source of this research is the work of students writing official letters. The theory used in the study was put forward in his books Soedjito and Solchan (2014), Tarigan (2005), Arifin (1980), and Bahar (2017). The hypotheses of this study are: (1) Students' ability to write official letters for class VIII.1 SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru based on systematic writing of official letters. (2) The students' ability in writing EYD grade VIII.1 SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru which has been determined is categorized as good (76-85). This research method is quantitative. The results of the research on the ability of class VIII.1 students of SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru for the 2018/2019 academic year. (1) Writing an official letter structure gets a score of 77.46. The lowest student score is 65 and the highest score is 92.5. (2) The use of punctuation marks scored 88.51. The lowest student score is 50 and the highest score is 100. The ability of Class VIII.1 students of SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru in the 2018/2019 academic year in writing official letters on the aspect of using capital letters correctly in writing official letters is categorized as good (76-85). It is proven from the overall score of students with an average value of 82.98. So, the hypothesis which says that the ability of class VIII.1 students of SMP Negeri 35 Pekanbaru in the 2018/2019 academic year in writing official letters is categorized as good "accepted".
