Abstract

This research is motivated by the large number of students in SMA Negeri 4 Pekanbaru who use polite and impolite language when speaking with their friends in discussion activities. The problems examined in this study are: How is the Principle of Politeness used by students in the discussion activities of Indonesian subjects in class X SMA Negeri 4 Pekanbaru in the Academic Year 2019/2020? The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze, and interpret the politeness principles that were used by students in the discussion activities of Indonesian subjects in class X SMA Negeri 4 Pekanbaru in Academic Year 2019/2020. To answer or solve the problem used the theory of Leech (Rahardi, 2010), Chaer (2010) and other supporting theories. The method used in this research is descriptive method. Data collection techniques in this study used observation and record techniques, and note taking techniques. After the data in the form of speech are collected, the following steps the writer takes are: 1) transcribing spoken language spoken to written language, and local languages into correct Indonesian, 2) identifying students' utterances containing maxims, 3) interpreting the types of participant's speech students who contain maxims in the politeness principle according to Leech (Rahardi, 2010), 4) conclude utterances that contain maxims according to Leech's theory (Rahardi, 2010). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the politeness principle that is most commonly found in speeches among students in discussion activities is the maxim of wisdom which amounts to 62 utterances. Speeches that adhere to the wisdom maxim are because some students are able to make polite speeches and can minimize losses and maximize profits for their interlocutors when the discussion activity occurs. Whereas the speech that violates the maxim of wisdom is caused by the short speech of the students and the presence of jealousy, envy, and other attitudes that cause the speech to be impolite. This means that according to available data, grade X students of SMA Negeri 4 Pekanbaru pay more attention and consider the wisdom maxim. The fewest were found to be a maxim of simplicity which amounted to 1 utterance, agreement maxims or compatibility maxim which amounted to 3 utterances, generosity maxim which amounted to 6 utterances, and a maxim of appreciation which amounted to 8 utterances and no utterances contained sympathetic maxims. This means that class X students of SMA Negeri 4 Pekanbaru lack an attitude of simplicity, compatibility or agreement, generosity, respect or give appreciation and sympathy towards other students.
