Abstract

A recitation method is one method to improve critical thinking ability. Based on previous observation, there were some facts indicating that the students’ critical thinking ability at SMAN 14 Pekanbaru is still low, which is proved by some signs of low critical thinking ability, namely students are not able to draw conclusions, students are not able to identify irrelevance and relevance, students are not able to find differences, and students are not able to interpret what is observed. The problem formulation of this study is whether the application of recitation method can improve students’ critical thinking ability in learning Islamic studies in class XI Science 1 of SMAN 14 Pekanbaru ?. The aim of this study is to investigate the improvement of critical thinking ability by applying recitation method in class XI Science 1 of SMAN 14 Pekanbaru. This is a classroom action research (CAR), and some tests are used to measure students' critical thinking ability. The data analysis technique used in this study is descriptive statistics by comparing the percentages of students’ test results. The results of this study show that before applying the recitation method in pre-cycle, students’ critical thinking ability is in the category of very low (32%). After applying the recitation method in cycle 1, students’ critical thinking ability increased by (79%) with the category of sufficient. And after applying the recitation method in cycle 2, students’ critical thinking ability increased by (93%) with the category of very high. In conclusion, the application of recitation method can improve students’ critical thinking ability in learning Islamic studies in class XI Science 1 of SMAN 14 Pekanbaru.
