Meranti wood has cellulose content which is around 49.6-56.1%, this makes the meranti wood powder trunks have the potential to be used as raw material for making carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a cellulose derivative compound that is biodegradable, colorless, odorless, non-toxic, granules or powder that dissolves in water. CMC from meranti wood powder is in Riau Central Sumatra, it is necessary to do a laboratory study of the effect of CMC from meranti wood powder on filtration loss and thickening time on drilling cement To determine the effect of CMC samples of meranti wood powder, CMC was made and the drilling cement was tested at the Petroleum Engineering Laboratory - Islamic University of Riau. The process of making CMC from meranti wood powder starts from boiling, washing, compaction, sample bleaching, alkalization process, CMC synthesis, neutralizing, drying the sample and filtering the sample to become CMC powder. After that, filtration loss and thickening time tests were carried out on drilling cement with a concentration of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% From filtration loss testing with additive CMC of meranti wood powder, the results were said to be feasible, namely at a concentration of 1.5% 246.46 ml and 2% 235.51 ml. % 94.34 minutes, 1% 102.04 minutes, 1.5% 111.11 minutes, 2% 119.05 minutes. For additive CMC of meranti wood powder at a temperature of 120 ° C, the results were obtained with a concentration of 0.5% 76.92 minutes, 1% 83.33 minutes, 1.5% 87.72 minutes and 2% 92.59 minutes. Judging from the results it has been obtained that each addition of concentration shows that every CMC additive can slow down the cement suspension hardening process
