Abstract

The formation of emulsion is a thing that cannot be prevented during crude oil production and water in oil emulsion is a type of emulsion that normally finds out in crude oil production. One of the negative effects from emulsion formation is it will occur the decrease of crude oil quality and one of the methods that can be used for overcoming this problem is to use chemical method by injecting the demulsifier. Demulsifier injection is powerful for overcoming the water in oil emulsion problem, however, some of demulsifier formulations can be environmentally unacceptable. Hence, in this research will be using demulsifier formulation from crude palm oil (DCP) that is produced using saponification method. In order to know how effective this palm oil based demulsifier works, a commercial demulsifier is used as a comparison. This research was carried out using the bottle test method with demulsifier injection concentration gradually increased from 1,96%v/v to 2,91%v/v, and 3,84%v/v and the emulsion sampels were tested at temperature 45 o o C, 50 o C, and 60 C. This research also investigated the effect of salinity and pH to demulsifiaction process using the demulsifier. The results of experiment showed that demulsification of water in oil emulsion increasing when the demulsifier injection concentration and temperature tester are increased furthermore the changing of salinity and pH values will impact to the demulsification process. However, the adding xylene and toluene to 0.4%v/v into palm oil based demulsifier do not give a good demulsification more than DCP and commercial demulsifier do. In this study, the best conditions for the use of DCP were in the temperature at 60 o C with the demulsifier injection concentration at 3,84%v/v in water in oil emulsion salinity 1000 ppm with water separation pH at 8.26 that achived 98% volume of water separation.
