Abstract

This research aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the intensity of the use of social media and consumptive behavior among students of the Faculty of Psychology Islamic University of Riau. The research population was students of the Faculty of Psychology Islamic University of Riau with a total sample of 279 people obtained using purposive sampling technique. Data collection uses two scales, namely the scale of the intensity of social media use and the scale of consumptive behavior. The data analysis technique in this research using non-parametric technique with the Spearman Rank's correlation method. From the results of the analysis obtained a correlation coefficient of 0.220 with a significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05), which indicates that there is a significant relationship with a positive direction between the intensity of social media use and consumptive behavior in students of the Faculty of Psychology Islamic University of Riau. That is the higher the intensity level of social media use, the higher the level of consumptive behavior, and vice versa. The effective contribution given by the variable intensity of social media use is 0.091 or 9.1% for constructive behavior.
