Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the forms and the functions of phatic communion applied by the characters in Little Women movie by used socio- pragmatics approach. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. It employed total sampling technique. The dialogs containing the phatic communion were taken as data. The forms of phatic communion are analyzed based on Aitchison’s theory, and the functions of phatic communion are analyzed based on jumanto’s theory. The result of this research shows 50 data applied the forms of phatic communion. The forms of phatic communion applied in Little Women movie are, Ritual words that are exchanged when people meet applied 30 data, Standard topic of conversation applied 7 data, Meaningless word applied 7 data, and Supportive chat applied 6 data applied . Besides that, there are 61 data applied the functions of phatic communion in Little Women movie. The functions of phatic communion are, Break the silence 34 data, Expressing solidarity 8 data, Keeping the conversation 7 data, Starting conversation 6 data, Making small talk 4 data, Expressing solidarity 1data, Expressing empathy 1 data, Expressing respect 1 data, and Expressing politeness 1 data.
